Urban SUP Destination: San Francisco Bay Area

When dreaming of warm, calm and crystal clear waters to standup paddleboard in, San Francisco is not always the first place that comes to mind... However, where it lacks in the department of warmth, it makes up for in its vast variety of top notch SUP spots featuring an option suitable for every paddler. Whether you are a casual cruiser, SUP surfer, down winding fanatic or a hard core racer, the San Francisco Bay Area offers a SUP experience for you. In this blog post, we outline the locations we enjoy most and hope you will take the time to check them out for yourself.

Where to: SUP Surf

The SF Bay is lined with beautiful scenery and an amazing coast line that won’t get old. Beginning in the Southern part of the area, you’ll be graced with spots like Pacifica, Lindamar and Montara which are all great SUP surf spots. Heading North, you will hit Ocean Beach, which lies within the outskirts of San Francisco in the iconic Richmond and Sunset Districts. Once you are ready to head North, drive on over the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin and hit our favorite SUP surf spot, Bolinas Beach. Here, you will find the Desolation Paddle crew out SUP surfing on board the 10'6 Ko Lipe Carbon or the 12' Lanai Carbon SUP boards.

Where to: Downwind

In an area where the wind is a part of everyday life, it’s no wonder that down winding is greatly enjoyed by the SF Bay Area SUP community. Launch spots in San Francisco can be hard to come by but for down winding, you have a few great options like Crissy Field and Aquatic Park in Ghiradelli Square. For those of you looking to launch on the Marin County side where it’s a bit more calm, Baker Beach, Schoonmaker Point and China Camp State Park are great places to enter. When paddling on the bay, you will experience majestic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, the Sausalito and San Francisco Waterfronts and will experience hefty tides and wind. If you’re into down winding, rest assured that the SF Bay Area offers an experience for you. When we head out on the bay, our go to boards are the 14' Desolation Fastnet Carbon , 12’6 Desolation Transpac-Carbon and the 12’ Desolation Lanai-Carbon SUP boards. Being they are designed on the SF Bay itself, you can bet these boards are built for the environment!

Where To: Harbor cruise & sup yoga

For a calm and peaceful paddle, look towards the sheltered harbors that grace the SF Bay. For a view of the San Francisco city front, a glimpse of the infamous Alcatraz or a panoramic view of the surrounding area, head on over to Aquatic Park in San Francisco. If you are looking for an up close and personal view of the Golden Gate Bridge, shoot across the bay to the historic Fort Baker in Sausalito where you’ll enjoy our favorite view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Once you’ve taken in the surrounding area, make your way down the road to Schoonmaker Beach in Sausalito for a relaxing SUP yoga session, a cruise down the Sausalito Waterfront and to enjoy a plethora of sailboat lined docks, harbor seals and the iconic houseboat communities that line the waterfront.
